The mailing lists are still the best way to keep abreast of announcements and also communicate with each other!  There are two lists.  To subscribe to them, please see

1) The GCF list has official announcements of weekly events and any special notices regarding events.  It is very helpful to subscribe to this list!  It is at gcf@lists.uchicago.edu.

2) The GCF-Open list has unofficial communication, such as people organizing to go to an event together, people requesting help in moving, or simply intriguing questions for discussion!  It is at gcf-open@lists.uchicago.edu.

Both lists are subject to moderation (the main list is tightly moderated) and as such do not receive spam.  Neither list has more than a few messages per week, so please don't worry about the volume of e-mail traffic!
